Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) Public Celebration of the Feast of Absalom Jones Celebration
The Union of Black Episcopalians Diocese of Newark Chapter will celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first person of African descent ordained a deacon and priest in the Episcopal Church, in an in-person and online service.
Celebrant: The Rt. Rev. Carlye J. Hughes, 11th Bishop of Newark.
The service will be in person and live streamed to the diocesan YouTube channel, youtube.com/c/dionewark.
150th Diocesan Anniversary Event: Speaker Series 2025
Dr. Douglas is Visiting Professor of Theology at Harvard Divinity School for the 2024-25 academic year. From 2017 to 2023, she was Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Theology. She was named the Bill and Judith Moyers Chair in Theology at Union in November 2019 where she is now Dean emerita. She served as Interim President of Episcopal Divinity School from 2023-24. Ordained as an Episcopal Priest in 1983, Douglas currently serves as the Canon Theologian at the Washington National Cathedral and Anglican Communion Canon at Newcastle Cathedral in Newcastle, England. Douglas is the author of many articles and several books including the 2023 Grawemeyer Award winning book, Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter. Her academic work has focused on womanist theology, racial justice issues as well as sexuality and the Black church.
Diocesan Event: Confirmation Service at Trinity & St. Philip's Cathedral
This Confirmation service is limited to a maximum of 30 Candidates. While candidates may bring any number of guests with them, 6-8 is a recommended maximum, not including their clergy or sponsors/presenters.
